Help Literacy and Justice 4 All ensure all children have the right to literacy
Literacy and Justice 4 All is a non-profit organization committed to combating systemic racism within underprivileged communities. Literacy and Justice 4 All seeks to address the link between low literacy rates and incarceration. We believe that literacy is a human right. Literacy and Justice 4 All ensures students, of all backgrounds, enrolled within Brockton Public Schools at the elementary age are able to have this human right. Literacy and Justice 4 All does so, through book drives, hands- on reading sessions, and community events. Literacy and Justice 4 All recognizes the historical and racial roots low literacy has in urban communities, especially among African American children.
Systemic racism can be defined as ingrained policies and practices that disadvantage people of color. African Americans are largely affected by systemic racism. In education, this has led to the "school-to-prison pipeline" where Black and Brown youth are disproportionately pushed out of school and into the criminal justice system. Factors that contribute to the “school-to-prison pipeline” are: unequal school funding, harsh disciplinary practices (expulsion), and limited access to early literacy support. There are powerful statistics demonstrating the connection between systemic racism, low literacy rates, and high incarceration within the Black and Brown community.
In Brockton, a predominantly Black and Brown community, systemic inequalities in education are abundant. Funding shortages in local schools lead to larger class sizes and fewer resources, which hinder academic success.
Students of all races in the Brockton Public School system are affected by this systemic adversity. Literacy and Justice 4 All simply recognizes that Black and Brown people are more likely to live in low funded underprivileged communities, affecting the literacy rates of their youth.
At Literacy and Justice 4 All, we are dedicated to fostering a love of reading and enhancing literacy among children in grades k through 4. By working directly with children to curate a list of books they truly enjoy, we help ensure they have access to books they are excited to read - according to Scholastic, "59% of infrequent readers agree they have trouble finding books they like.” Children read more when they have books they love. To support this we hold book drives, welcome donations, and maintain an Amazon registry to provide low income families with books tailored to their child's interest.
Donors make our work possible. With the help of donors we can break the cycle of systemic racism and low literacy in our community. Your contributions help us provide books that children love, support literacy programs, and expand access to resources for low-income families. By giving, you empower children to build the skills they need to succeed, reducing the barriers that led to inequalities and high incarceration rates. Every dollar brings us closer to ensuring every child has the tools to thrive and the chance at a brighter future.

Additionally, funds will support our hands-on reading initiatives, where we provide interactive reading sessions at schools and local organizations. Your donations will also sustain our community events, book drives, and community outreach and advocacy.
